Voice Over Internet Protocol. Used to transmit voice calls over a converged voice and data network. In VoIP, the DSP segments the voice signal into frames, which then are coupled into groups of two and stored in voice packets.

ANALOG:
A transmission system that uses repeaters that compensate for analog medium impairments and produce output signals that are linear-scaled versions of input signals. Can carry speech, data, vido and supervisory signals, but are best suited for speech signals.

T-1:
A leased line connection that can carry 1,544,000 bits per second. Most commonly used digital transmission service in US, Canada and Japan. Consists of 24 separate channels, using pulse code modulation (PCM) signals with time-division multiplexing (TDM). T-1 lines were orignally designed to transmit digitized voice signals. Current applications also include digital data transmission. Can include copper, optical and wireless media wiring.

MPLS:
Multi-Protocol Label Switching. A mechanism for packet forwarding in network routers. Works by tagging packets with an indentifier (label) to distinguish LSPs (Label Switched Paths). Then it looks up the LSP in its own forwarding table to determine the best link over which to forward the packet, and the label to use on the next hop. A different label is used for each hop allowing for the use of fast and simple forwarding engines, as the router can select the label to minimize processing.

28 times the capacity of a T-1 line (45Mbps). Most often provided over fiber optic cables. Holds the bandwidth necessary to support many internet service providers or off-site backup needs of corporations. Transports up to 672 simultaneous telephone calls.
